Amazing book art

Lamenting over the future of the printed press? Sick of the Kindles and e-readers on the train? Miss the smell of a new book? Well it’s unlikely that Brian Dettmer will stop the inexorable shift to digital publication, but he may re-kindle some of your faith in the artistry of books. Have a look:

American Dettmer uses scalpels, tweezers, and grips to make meticulous trimmings to pages from old encyclopedias, dictionaries and medical journals. He adds nothing to the books, only takes away – little by little, page by page. The results are truly amazing.

Because of his legendary patience, precision, and the tools he uses to create his pieces, Dettmer has been dubbed “The Book Surgeon” by his many worldwide followers. Said Dettmer,
“The richness and depth of the book is universally respected yet often undiscovered as the monopoly of the form and relevance of the information fades over time. The book’s intended function has decreased and the form remains linear in a non-linear world. By altering physical forms of information and shifting preconceived functions, new and unexpected roles emerge.”

Divers hand in their four planned dives the day before the first day of competition and are scored by five high diving judges. The tour includes stops in Yalta, Ukraine, La Rochelle, France,Rapa Nui, Chile and Hilo, Hawaii amongst others.

Watch: Marauder Armoured personnel carrier

The Marauder is an armoured, mine-protected vehicle that is produced by the Paramount Group in South Africa. It was launched during the 2007 International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) and Conference in Abu Dhabi, the largest arms exhibition in the Middle East. In June 2011, the civilian version of the Marauder was featured in British motoring program Top Gear, with Richard Hammond comparing it to the discontinued Hummer. Among the activities tested were ordering fast-food from a drive-through restaurant, driving off-road and over cars, and—specifically in comparison with the Hummer H3—being blasted by seven pounds of plastic explosive. Unlike the (civilian spec) Hummer, which was completely destroyed by the explosion, the Marauder was still operational and sustained only minor damage for the most part, although it did drive off with a blown tire.

NSFW: Amazing Yakuza tattoos

NSFW: Careful, your boss may not want to find you looking at pictures of naked Japanese gangsters.
Yakuza tattoo 1
In Japan, the popular children’s game “spot the gangster” is really far too easy: he is the man with the sprawling technicolour tattoo of a tiger and swirling cherry blossoms etched into the skin of his back. The man is most probably a member of the the Japanese mafia, or yakuza, and although his back designs are making you want to look, you really probably shouldn’t.

The Japanese have associated tattooing (or irezumi) with criminality for hundreds of years. In ancient times, tattoos were given to outlaws as a punishment, and the tattoo taboo continued well into the 20th century. Nowadays this amazing body art is legal again, but done the traditional way with an irezumi brush made of 46 stainless steel needles, and costing upwards of £20,000 for a full body suit, it might still be seen as a form of punishment!

An irezumi brush - how real gangsters get tattooed
Horrific though the irezumi brush may be, in skilled hands it creates some of the most beautiful images ever seen on skin. And thankfully for the sake of gender equality and general aesthetics, yakuza tattoos are not reserved exclusively for the dangerous men.

see :Marble Cathedral

Marble Cathedral, Argentina
The Marble Cathedral is one of the most amazing places you’ve probably never seen. Intricately carved out of the marble cliffs by the shimmering, turquoise waters of Lake General Carrera, this beautiful network of caverns is nature’s architecture at its finest.

General Carrera
The Marble Cathedral is just one of a number of amazing rock formations along the shores of Lake General Carrera, Chile, South America’s second largest freshwater lake (aka Lake Buenos Aires in Argentina). But it’s not surprising that they’re a little off the tourist map: from the nearest city it’s a 200-mile drive along hairy dirt roads to get to this area of remote Patagonia.
Marble Cathedral
In this totally unspoilt region, the pure glacial water almost seems to glow (like the bio-luminescent bay we featured a while back), lighting up the patterned walls of the caves both above and below the surface. This is due to ‘glacial flour’, finely ground particles of rock which are suspended in the water and scatter the light.
